Andrew W.K. Attempts To Drum Up World Record At O Music Awards

The 'Party King' set to play drums for 24 hours during O Music Awards, the Jonas Brothers also join the show!

Over the years, the O Music Awards have played host to world-record setting efforts like Chiddy Bang's 9-hour, 16-minute freestyle and the Flaming Lips' superhuman eight-show effort.

But both of those endeavors pale in comparison to what profound partymeister Andrew W.K. has in store for Wednesday's O Music Awards, where he'll attempt to set a new (and very specific) world record of his own: Longest Drum Session in a Retail Store.

Yes, for the duration of this year's awards — 24 hours (!) — W.K. will man the kit in Oakley's flagship Times Square store, being joined by the occasional surprise guest (the Roots' metronome ?uestlove will serve as his co-pilot for the first leg of the journey). But mainly, he'll be going it alone, and, as he explained to MTV News ... he's actually slightly terrified about the task at hand.

"Despite my apparent confidence, inside I am actually a very small, trembling shell of a person, who is not only intimidated, but completely mortified and horrified by the ramifications of this challenge," he said. "When I signed up for it, I was like 'Alright, 24 hours of drumming!' and then it started to set in: 24 hours of drumming. Just drumming for an hour — just drumming for 24 seconds — can be quite intense ... I can't even play one of my own songs on the drums all the way through without my arms burning.

"So let it be said, I'm not taking this lightly," he continued. "I think it will push me to the very lengths of my strengths."

Hey, no one ever said setting a world record would be easy. Meanwhile, as W.K. mashes, the O Music Awards' first-ever "Live Music Day" festival — featuring more than 50 acts, including Hanson, Kat Dahlia and Kate Nash — will be in full swing. And today, we've got a brand-new name to add to the event: the Jonas Brothers, who will help kick the day off with an exclusive performance!

Yes, Kevin, Nick and Joe will help kick off "Live Music Day" with a performance that's set to feature a medley of songs off their highly anticipated fifth album, including new single "First Time."

It all begins Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT at OMusicAwards.com!

2 Chainz, Ed Sheeran Inspired Big Time Rush On <i>24/Seven</i>

Group talks to MTV News about how five years of work resulted in their 'best album yet.'
By Cory Midgarden

With the extra load of their Nickelodeon series and an upcoming summer tour, 2013 has been a pretty strenuous journey for Big Time Rush. But ever since they dropped 24/Seven on Tuesday, Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena and Logan Henderson are enjoying the fruits of their labor.

"It feels like we had just climbed a mountain; now we're looking out over the view," Schmidt told MTV News of completing their third studio album.

"We worked hard on this album and we wrote most all of it. I think it's our best album yet so we're excited to actually have it out now," Henderson added, with Schmidt backing him up: "It is the best album yet, which is 'BAY' for abbreviation."

But getting 24/Seven to BAY status didn't happen overnight. According to Maslow, the band started on the project nearly five years ago. With so much time having passed between now and then, the group really had the opportunity to find their inspirations.

"We have tons of influences," James said. "A huge part of that are the fans, you know, on Twitter and Instagram and all that stuff every day and we know what they want to hear, we know the songs that have worked, the songs that haven't, and so we have a pretty good barometer of what works and what they like."

The guys also took notes from some of their favorite acts as well, including Alt-J, Ed Sheeran and 2 Chainz, just to name a few.

"We also listen to a lot of music on our own," Kendall explained. "I mean just music that we love and we take influences from that stuff, I mean you go see concerts and you see how people play a show live and you take that and you use it."

Is Kanye West A Lock For Huge First-Week Sales Debut?

J. Cole, Mac Miller projected to come in well behind 'Ye's Yeezus, according to experts who spoke to MTV News.

Could Kanye West land the second-biggest debut of the year after his eagerly anticipated Yeezus hits shelves next week? The album, due out Tuesday, has had one of the most unconventional roll-outs in recent memory and, according to reports from a listening party earlier this week, it's a more complicated listen than some of 'Ye's previous efforts.

The album's purported track list leaked on Friday, but little else is known about it, other than Kanye's repeated pledge to do things his way.

Like Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience, Yeezus kind of appeared out of nowhere and went from a rumor to retail in rapid succession. And, like Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, West has blazed new trails in his promotional activities hyping the album.

With all that said, it appears that when the June 26 chart is revealed, he'll fall somewhere in between JT's nearly million-selling opening frame and DP's career-best 339,000 bow last month. Either way, he's on the road to the second biggest week and second biggest debut of 2013 so far.

"Kanye West is rolling out his album in a very unconventional way," said Keith Caulfield, Associate Director of Charts/Retail for Billboard magazine. "The element of surprise and mystery helps. And people just want to hear what he has to say. As we've seen with various artists this year, unconventional rollouts can work."

But given that West hasn't released an official single, or video to date and has pledged not to, is it possible he could reach the same heights as 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which sold 496,000 copies during Thanksgiving week of that year? Basing predictions on early orders from retailers, the first-week performance of comparable releases and the amount of media exposure on radio, YouTube and other media, Caulfield said West is a lock for #1 with sales in the 500,000 range.

HITS Daily Double Editor-in-Chief Lenny Beer also felt confident that West would debut at #1, though he thought 500,000 seemed a bit inflated. "I'm thinking it will debut at #1, but my guess is around 350,000 because he's big, but I don't think he will get those extra buyers who need to have a particular song," he said.

MTV News also asked Kevin Bradley, sports book manager for Bovada.lv to lay odds on Kanye having a #1 debut. "Putting odds to something like this is quite a challenge since we have never done this before and it is pretty unique having four big albums coming out the same day," he said of the Kanye debut, as well as albums by J. Cole and Mac Miller and country heartthrob Hunter Hayes.

Bradley put Kanye's odds at taking the top spot at 1-to-1, which makes it pretty much an air-tight bet. While Kanye will almost certainly land a #1 debut — based on a similar formula that looks at the artist's history and a look at the iTunes pre-order system — Beer said his concern is what kind of legs Yeezus will have, because without a certified radio or viral hit song at radio it might struggle to pull in fans in week two. Beer noted that having a buzzed-about track has always been important and if you want to stay on the charts, he said, you have to score some hit singles.

"The label has to get behind it, but great artists are entitled to do what they want to do," he said about 'Ye's unique path with Yeezus. That said, if a single does get released and get some traction at radio, Beer said it could be a whole different story.

Find Out Why Even Kanye West Can't Control Everything.

It's clear Kanye will win the week, but both men said a seeming lock for #2 is Cole's Born Sinner. "It's interesting how he purposely put himself in direct competition with Kanye," said Caulfield, referencing a recent Billboard cover story in which Cole said he specifically moved up the release of Sinner up by a week because he wanted to compete with one of the greats. "Sometimes other artists follow [a bit release] and it turns into a great day for music where a lot of interesting albums come out on the same day," he said.

Beer and Caulfield said Cole seemed poised to fall into the 150,000-200,000 range with the latter saying a #2 open is pretty much a lock. "He's a very well-respected artist at an early stage in his career and I think he's built up a lot of fans," Beer said, also anticipating a #2 debut. Bradley put Cole's odd at seven-to-one.

Beer was less bullish on Mac Miller's Watching Movies With the Sound Off, which he thought might top out at 50,000, enough for a top-five debut. Caulfield, though, pegged Miller as a #3 contender, though he said it might be hard to beat the 144,000 figures for the rapper's major-label debut, Blue Slide Park. Hell, even Mac predicted that Cole and West would probably crush him next week! Bradley agreed, putting the odds on Miller's #1 debut at 15-to-1.

Both men were of one mind that while Hunter Hayes is clearly on the come-up, his Hunter Hayes -- Encore, Deluxe Edition doesn't feel like a guaranteed big first-week seller. "It's just a reissue with additional tracks, not a stand-alone EP with a new, separate release," said Caulfield. Bradley put Hayes' odds at hitting the top at four-to-five.

‘Man Of Steel’: What’s Next For Superman?

Zack Snyder opens up to MTV News about the future of the movies.

Although the "Dark Knight" films created an amazing universe for DC Comics characters to flourish, there have been precious few successful adaptations of other DC characters — "Green Lantern," anybody? — as the company is trying to mobilize its cinematic canon. As such, it seems appropriate that there was a small reference to that Bat-world in "Man of Steel" as DC attempts to get its own "Avengers"-style team-up, "Justice League," off the ground.

"There's no conference I had with DC where they said, 'is there any way we can get Lexcorp in there? Or Wayne Enterprises'," "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder told MTV News. "I'm just like, this is cool stuff — we need to put it in the movie. Because I feel like it shows that there's a big DC Universe is out there."

Even before the release of "Man of Steel," Hollywood rumbled with rumors that a "Justice League" movie is imminent. But Snyder insisted that Superman is the character that the DC Universe needs to get right before that can occur — which is probably why he's directing its forthcoming sequel, as it was reported Thursday.

"Superman absolutely is the king daddy of the DC Universe. If Superman works, you can really make a lot of other stuff work," Snyder admitted prior to the announcement he would be tackling "Man of Steel 2." "And when we have conversations about 'is there more to do in the DC world?' my answer always is, well, when Superman works, then you can talk about it. But until that, you can't really do anything."

'Man Of Steel' Exclusive Clip Shows Superman In Battle: Watch Now!

Snyder's "Man of Steel 2" — as we're calling it — is the only DC Universe film currently in development, at least publicly. But with any luck, a "Justice League" film is on the horizon, although Snyder admitted that Christopher Nolan's Batman films didn't create the kind of mythology that just anyone can join. "What Chris made are movies," he said. "He didn't make a TV show that you can jump in on and shoot an episode of. And the idea of continuing that is hard."

"So it's something to think about, but it's a very long conversation."

Taylor Swift Remembers Ed Sheeran’s ‘Medieval’ Obsession That Almost Killed Her

Swift tells MTV News that sometimes Sheeran would wave around his sword on tour 'and then just leave.'

Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran are besties. They even manage to squeeze in some quality BFF time with one another in between stops on the Red tour. But sometimes things get a little too real between the "Everything Has Changed" singers.

When MTV News caught up with Swift last week, she confirmed that during a flight earlier this year to Nashville, she was nearly stabbed by Sheeran's sword. Confused? Well, let her explain.

"He got this sword... he went to New Zealand and got this sword. The actual [director] Peter Jackson gave him a sword from a 'Lord of the Rings' movie. And he was obsessed with it to the point where like he would come into by dressing room waving it and then just leave," Swift said.

"Or he'd just get it out on the plane and everybody is like, we don't know if that's OK on a plane. It's a weapon, but it's a medieval weapon [so] we don't know, I don't know," she continued. "But he's obsessed with stuff like that. He's obsessed with Legos. He's obsessed with swords, like axes, stuff like that. It was on the table [on the trip to Nashville] and it started to slide."

Of course, it never touched Swift, which Sheeran first cleared up when telling us about the incident back in March. He further noted that he knows what everyone on the tour thinks of his weapon of choice. He said, "I think [Taylor] and her crew were weirded out by it anyway. They were just like, 'Why does Ed have a sword?' "

The ginger-haired singer/songwriter is currently opening for Swift on her Red tour, which wraps up its North American leg in Nashville on September 21 before she heads to Australia and New Zealand for six dates in November and December.

Chief Keef’s Camp Blames Police For ‘Excessive Force’ In New Arrest

Chicago Police used AK-47s to arrest rapper on trespassing charges four blocks from courthouse, camp claims.

The trouble continues to mount for Chief Keef. The 17-year old rapper went to court on Monday (June 17) and pleaded guilty to speeding, walking out with an 18-month probation sentence, only to be arrested after the hearing, just four blocks away from the courthouse.

Now, the rapper's camp is saying the Chicago Police Department used "excessive force" when six officers, pulled over the vehicle Keef was riding in and drew AK-47 assault rifles out on the teenage star and arrested him on criminal trespassing charges. "It is not normal practice for police to come from the south side armed with AK47's to arrest a person on misdemeanor trespassing charges, but clearly Chief Keef is a special young man that garner special treatment from the Chicago Police Department," read a statement issued to popular Chicago music site FakeShoreDrive.com.

The Chicago police wouldn't address the excessive force claim, but did confirm with MTV News that Monday's arrest stemmed from a May 16 incident at the Parkway Gardens Housing Projects in Chicago.

Shortly before the arrest, the "I Don't Like" rapper, born Keith Cozart, pleaded guilty to speeding 110 mph in a 55mph zone on May 28, the Chicago Tribune reported earlier Monday.

"You think you're invincible, and you're certainly not," a Cook County Circuit Court judge is reported as telling Keef after he was fined $531, handed 18 months of probation and ordered him to perform 60 hours of community service, random drug testing and to complete eight hours of traffic school. "I sure hope I don't see you again, because if I do, you better be ready to go to jail."

Kanye West’s <i>Yeezus</i> ‘Came To Life’ In A ‘Sacred Process’

Houston MC/producer Travis Scott tells MTV News he joined 'Ye in Paris 'super early' to help curate tracks like 'Black Skinhead.'

Kanye West called upstart Travis Scott to Paris early to work on the Chicago MC's much-anticipated Yeezus, a process the newbie calls a "turning point" for him.

Before "Yeezy Season" officially began, Travis Scott explained that the snippets he'd heard of Kanye West's Yeezus album were from the year 3,000. Now that the LP is complete and ready to drop, the Houston rapper/producer has shed some light on working with Kanye.

Scott is signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle label but has done a substantial amount of work with 'Ye, getting co-production credit on multiple Yeezus tracks, including "Black Skinhead," "I Am a God" and "Guilt Trip."

"I went to Paris super early," Scott told MTV News of how he ended up on West's monster album. "At one point it was just me, Kanye and Noah [in the studio], and that's when he first introduced me to some of the [song] ideas. I was just around him a lot, especially for this album, curating sonics," he added. "It's like crazy memories."

The 21-year-old recalled hearing "Black Skinhead" twice in the span of about a week and being blown away by the changes that Kanye had made in so little time. "I was [in Paris] and I left and came back to the States to do the [mtvU] Woodie Awards. When I came back, he played me what changed in the next week, just new ideas and sh--, man, and 'Black Skinhead' was really coming to life. I was like, 'Man, I'm learning how to make an album; that sh-- is coming to life. It was like a turning point right there."

Thought Scott didn't want to give up too many details about the actual recording sessions, he continued to emphasize how meticulous West was while putting the project together. "Kanye works all the time. He's sacred to his process of working. He has his own work ethic and I'm on the same mental.

"I just heard the songs and added to [them]," Travis said of his contributions. "I was just giving my thoughts. Like I said, his process of working, it's ill, man. We [were just trying out] mad ideas and then whatever comes out, comes out.

Yeezus will officially be released on Tuesday.

Audiences have loved Spider-Man for more than 10 years already, but he's set to embark on a series of new adventures that is nothing short of amazing. Sony Pictures announced Monday (June 17) that following the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" on May 2, 2014, the web-slinger will return to the screen two more times by 2018. Two yet-to-be-named sequels are scheduled for release on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018, expanding the hero's current series of films to four.

Spider-Man first came to the silver screen in 2002 with the release of "Spider-Man," a box-office phenomenon that, along with "X-Men," can take credit for the explosion of superhero-themed stories being told by movie studios. Director Sam Raimi, who helmed that film as well as its two sequels, wrapped up his storyline in 2007, forcing audiences to wait five years for another big-screen adventure featuring the wall crawler. But after Marc Webb's reboot, which retold the character's origin story and added a few new details, Spider-Man seems more popular than ever.

Jamie Foxx Reveals Secrets Behind His 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Performance

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is, like its predecessor, directed by Webb, although "Transformers" and "Star Trek" screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci took over script duties from James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" opens in theaters nationwide May 2, 2014.

Hunter Hayes Just Needed To ‘Reset’ To Write <i>Encore</i> Tunes

With Hunter Hayes about to drop his new album, Encore, on Tuesday, fans might be wondering what inspired some of the album's newer cuts like "I Want Crazy" and "Light Me Up." Well, as it turns out, the road really amped up the 21-year-old to write the cuts that will keep his Hayniacs singing along all summer long.

"Nashville is awesome and I have loved getting to go into the studio and do my thing. My dad said 'When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,' and I agree with that," he says in the latest installment of Hunter's "For the Love of Music." The clip follows Hayes as he reminisces about work in the studio and later heads out on the road, explaining that touring fuels his music and vice versa. Encore is a deluxe re-release of his self-titled 2011 debut that includes several new songs.

"And for me going into the studio is not working, but it is kind of if anything for it is kind of a reset... kind of free your mind a little bit, I wouldn't have said I needed a reset after the tour finished but I'm glad we had one. I love Nashville. I love the studio thing but I live to go on the road and make music," he added. "But that feeds all the studio, the writing."

The "Wanted" singer will be back onstage in New York City on release day at Webster Hall, with Striking Matches opening the June 18 MTV Artist to Watch LIVE show. He's headlining the gig as a part of MTV's Artist to Watch series, which will stream live on MTV.com and CMT.com at 6 p.m. ET.

Then, later this year, Hayes will headline the 12th annual CMT on Tour, billed as the Let's Be Crazy Tour. It all kicks off October 10 in Knoxville, Tennessee, with dates slated through December. "It's gonna be a great summer, great fall. We've got a massive show planned for the fall. So, it's gonna be crazy, appropriately," he shared earlier this week about the jaunt.

Drake Wants To Sit And Talk To Chris Brown ‘Man-To-Man’

'I'm not confrontational but if someone challenges, I'm not going to back down,' Drizzy tells GQ of feud with singer.
By Rob Markman

Drake has been tangled in one of hip-hop's biggest feuds, but the Toronto rapper just wants to bury the hatchet before things get out of hand with Chris Brown.

"I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man. But that's not going to happen," Drake told GQ magazine in an excerpt that was posted to popular hip-hop blog Nahright.com.

Drizzy graces the cover of the mag's July 2013 issue and on Monday (June 17), sections of the interview hit the Internet. But while the YMCMB star had some words about Brown, he reportedly didn't mention Breezy's ex-girl, Rihanna, by name.

"I'm not confrontational but if someone challenges, I'm not going to back down. If I think about it too much, I feel it wrapping around my foot, like I get a feeling it could end really badly ... like, it gets really dark," he says about his issues with Brown, which are believed to stem from a situation between both men and Rihanna, and led to a bottle throwing-brawl in a New York City nightclub last year.

The Young Money hitmaker doesn't dwell on beef, however. He goes on to discuss the direction of his upcoming album, Nothing Was the Same, explaining that although he has mastered both rapping and singing, he's very much focused on his first love.

"This is my f---ing moment to say, 'If I wanted to rap all the time — really rap — I would, but I also love to make music. I'll do this for you right now," he tells the mag. "But it's for me, too, it's my story. ... I'm trying to get back to that kid in the basement, to say what he has to say. And I'm trying to make it last."

Part of Drake's story is his "Started From the Bottom" single, a song that left many critics questioning what "bottom" the rapper is referring to, considering that he first rose to fame as an actor on "Degrassi: The Next Generation."

"I think a lot of people wish their favorite rapper wrote it — as if a song like that should be gangster — but I was the one who wrote it, and everyone has their bottom," he says.

MTV News caught up with Drake on Saturday after he performed at Hot 107.9's Birthday Bash in Atlanta as a surprise guest alongside 2 Chainz. "Every time I touch down in the city, I got so many memories. This is really where I started with Wayne," he told MTV News backstage after his performance. "Tonight, to kinda give back and be out there with Chainz and get that look together was great."
